Dynamic Warm-Ups

Dynamic Warm-Up for the Lacrosse Athlete

Lacrosse athletes require speed, power, strength, agility, coordination and endurance to excel on the field. Properly warming-up prior to activity ensures athletes are prepared to demonstrate these athletic qualities to their full potential. Utilizing a dynamic warm-up, opposed to static stretching, will improve speed, power, strength, endurance, and balance. Static stretching, defined as holding a stretch for 10-30 seconds, however has been shown to reduce muscular power and strength and is better utilized for recovery following activity.

A dynamic warm-up is composed of exercises addressing the movement demands for muscles of the hips, groin, legs, lower and upper back, and shoulders while also addressing specific movements of the sport. Perform a light general warm-up, such as jogging sideline to sideline and back three times, prior to beginning the dynamic – warm-up. Click on the video link below for a sample of dynamic warm-up stretches. Perform each exercise over a distance of 10 yards, pausing in each position to ensure you are stretching the intended muscle groups.

Comprehensive Athlete Performance Screening (CAPS)

Comprehensive Athlete Performance Screening

The Comprehensive Athlete Performance Screening (CAPS) is an extensive evaluation designed to assess and optimize athletic performance. Created by strength and conditioning specialist, Ryan Carr and physical therapist, Rebecca Lee, CAPS breaks down 7 pillars of athleticism which make an athlete excel in their sport:  speed, power, agility, upper and lower body strength, flexibility, core strength and endurance.

Each athlete will receive a written report detailing how they compare to athletes of the same age. CAPS will also highlight any faulty mechanics, weaknesses, asymmetries and provide recommendations on how to optimize performance.

Reach your full potential and schedule with our CAPS specialists today! Individual and team options available. This program is ideal for athletes ages 10 and up. If you, your child or your team are interested in having an evaluation, please contact Ryan Carr.

Video Gait Analysis

Video Gait Analysis

If you are an athlete with running injuries, Dynamic Video Gait Analysis (DVGA) may help solve your injury problem. MedStar Sports Medicine’s experts are able to assess problems of the foot and lower extremity that may be causing your pain or symptoms.

DVGA helps assess the following:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle pain
  • Shin pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Low back pain

Multiple high-speed cameras identify reflective markers placed on several joints of the body, including the trunk, hip, knees, and feet. These markers are a reference point for several camera angles, which pick up any abnormal movement of these joints while a patient runs on a treadmill. Once the motion is recorded, a specialized computer software program pinpoints which joints are functioning incorrectly.

If joint alignment problems are discovered, a personalized sports medicine program is developed for the runner, which may include physical therapy for strengthening and flexibility, orthotic devices, or training and shoe modifications.

Concussion Therapy

Concussion Therapy

About Concussion and TBI

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a blow, jolt or bump to the head or a penetrating brain injury (from blunt trauma, vehicle crashes, falls, and sports) that disrupts the normal function of the brain. More than 1.5 million people suffer from these types of brain injuries. Adolescents, young adults, and older adults are the majority of patients who suffer from mild TBI.

While some patients receive emergency care— and even an appropriate diagnosis of mild TBI—many do not. Despite the persistence of symptoms— persistent headache, confusion, pain, cognitive and/or memory problems, fatigue, changes in sleep patterns and mood, dizziness/vertigo—people who suffer concussion often do not get necessary evaluation, testing or treatment by brain injury specialists.

Concussion Clinic

The Concussion Clinic is a unique outpatient service of MedStar Health that offers highly specialized services for people suffering from the lingering—and often life altering—results of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our staff provides the correct treatment those who need help with long-term cognitive impairment but do not require hospitalization.

The MedStar Health Concussion Clinic includes an assessment by a physician and/or neuropsychologist. At some sites, evaluations may be conducted by other trained healthcare professionals.

Evaluation includes:

  • Neurologic examination
  • Balance testing
  • Review of medications
  • Neuropsychological assessment
  • For athletes, if previous screening was done with ImPACT, testing may be repeated

The physician and neuropsychologist consult after the evaluation to make a treatment plan, which may include referrals for rehabilitation treatments or further medical consultations, such as:

  • Physical therapy for concussion rehabilitation and vestibular therapy.
  • Occupational therapy and speech-language pathology, as indicated.

The Role of Physical Therapy in the Treatment of Concussion

Concussion services include physical therapy to address persisting symptoms of fatigue, vestibular/balance issues, as well as head and neck pain. MedStar Health has trained physical therapists to assess individual symptoms and limitations. The physical therapist designs a treatment plan specific to the individual’s needs which can include vestibular, manual and cardiovascular therapy.

Vestibular Therapy — the vestibular system, the inner ear and its connections with the brain, is responsible for balance. The physical therapist provides specific exercises and training to reduce and/or stop dizziness and improve overall balance and stability.

Manual Physical Therapy — is used to decrease cranio-cervical dysfunction in the head and neck area to restore normal mobility. This includes cranial release, muscle energy techniques and myofascial release.

Aerobic/Cardiovascular Therapy — improving and restoring normal cardiovascular activity is a key component to recovery. The physical therapist helps to establish guidelines to resume physical activity gradually. In addition, the therapist works closely with athletic trainers, personal trainers, coaches and parents to design a return to play program that will assist with providing the greatest amount of recovery in a safe and realistic time frame.

Common causes:

  • Blunt trauma or acceleration or deceleration from motor vehicle crashes, falls firearm use, sport and recreation

Common patient population:

  • Adolescents and young adults (ages 15 to 24)
  • Older adults (age 65 and older)

Throwing Clinic

Throwing Clinic

Injuries seen previously only in professional pitchers are now commonplace in players of any position in high school and younger. The great majority of these are overuse/repetitive strain injuries that could be prevented with:

  • Proper education
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Conditioning

After completing the program, most pitchers are able to throw harder and with better control while decreasing their risk of injury and surgery.

It is our goal to bring the latest research in training and injury prevention to the baseball community. In addition to individual evaluations performed in the clinic, we give educational presentations to camps, teams and leagues outside the clinic. Evaluations include assessment of posture, strength and flexibility for the arm, core and lower extremities. We then use those findings to customize exercise programs that will be most beneficial for each individual athlete.

Non-Surgical Treatment

MedStar-Image-7Surgery Isn’t Always the Answer

Did you know that around 90 percent of all sports medicine injuries don’t need to be treated surgically? So, while we have some of the region’s most capable surgeons on our team, we’d like our patients to avoid the operating room as much as possible.

At MedStar Sports Medicine, we possess the skills, training and experience to quickly and effectively diagnose and treat injuries involving strains, sprains, dislocations, and many other ligament, joint and muscle injuries.

With proper modification of activity, various modalities (ice, heat, massage, electric stimulation, and ultrasound), medications, and specific/focused rehabilitation, we help professional athletes and weekend warriors alike to return quickly to their active lives.
