Overview

Athletic trainers are Nationally Board Certified, State Licensed Allied Healthcare professionals that work in a multitude of settings focused around sports medicine. It is the role of an athletic trainer to prevent, evaluate and treat injuries, provide timely referrals to the appropriate physicians, educate and communicate effectively to athletes, parents, coaches and physicians, and help facilitate a safe environment for the athlete to recover and return to play at their highest potential.

MedStar Sports Medicine carries a team of close to 50 certified athletic trainers who serve Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In those communities, our athletic training team provides services to youth, high school, college, and professional programs. The services our athletic trainers provide to these settings are not limited to: on-field provision of medical care; rapid access to medical care; comprehensive concussion care; comprehensive pre/post-season physicals; and management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.

MedStar Health Certified Athletic Trainers believe in a multidisciplinary approach and team approach. They work side by side regularly with Physicians, Physical Therapists, Sports Performance and Researchers.

MedStar Health’s Athletic Training team offers a variety of positions, including but not limited to; Full Time Physician Extender/Athletic Trainer in Physicians practice, Community Liaison, and a variety of Outreach positions in traditional sports settings (i.e. professional, semi-professional, collegiate, high school, and club sports teams/organizations).  There is also the potential for unique opportunities for dual credential professionals such as Physical Therapists/Physical Therapy Assistants.

Full-Time Physician Extender/Athletic Trainer in Physicians practice:
  • Provides assessments of patients including review of pertinent medical history information, performance of specific assessments, determination of recommendations and accurately communicate and present this information to the physician.
  • Acts as a physician-patient liaison in both surgical and nonsurgical conditions in conveying concerns and information. Responsible for educating patients and ensuring that the physician's instructions/protocols are understood and adhered to by the patient.

Community Liaison:

  • Serve as liaison between MedStar Health, MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital (MedStar NRH), community organizations, parents, athletes, outside physicians, and physical therapists to enhance community relationships, solidify program growth, and provide high quality health care services.
  • Seek new business and growth opportunities for MedStar Health (contracts, schools, teams, clubs, and programs) to build the sports medicine profile, solidifying these opportunities with partnership agreements, memorandums of understanding, and contracts.

Outreach positions:

  • Demonstrates proficient implementation of acute treatment protocols based upon assessment findings and the patient's clinical presentation.
  • Provides assessments of injured athletes onsite at the training facility on an as needed basis including review of pertinent medical history information, performance of specific assessments, determination of recommendations, and accurately and timely documentation of results.

Leadership team

  • Katie Brodka, Manager of Athletic Training Services & Physician Extender

    Greater Washington area

    Katie Brodka MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2014. She is the Coordinator of Athletic Training Services and oversees the athletic trainers in the Greater Washington, D.C., region. She also works as a physician extender with sports medicine trained orthopedic surgeons Dr. Wiemi Douoguih and Dr. Carter Mitchell as well as emergency and sports medicine trained physician, Dr. B. Elizabeth Delasobera.

    Katie earned her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 2008 from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) while playing lacrosse. She also obtained her graduate degree in Physical Education and Human Performance in 2010 from CCSU. She also worked as a graduate assistant responsible for men's soccer and baseball.

    Prior to joining MedStar Health, Katie was an assistant athletic trainer at St John's University in Queens, New York. She worked primarily with the baseball team year-round and covered women's soccer in the fall. She has a special interest in the throwing athlete, thoracic mobilization and core stabilization in pitcher's maintenance rehab, concussion awareness, and community outreach.

  • Carissa Colangelo, Manager of Athletic Training Services & Physical Therapy Assistant

    Greater Baltimore area

    Carissa Colangelo MS, LAT, ATC, PTA, CSCS is currently a manager of Athletic Training Services for MedStar Health Sports Medicine. She assists the regional director of the program with oversight of the MedStar Health athletic trainers serving in the Greater Baltimore region. She began her role as a coordinator in the athletic training program in 2013. Carissa has also worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) at MedStar Health Physical Therapy, South Baltimore since 2009.

    Carissa graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 2001 with her physical therapist assistant associate degree and a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training. In 2003, Carissa then graduated from Ohio University with a master's degree in Athletic Training and Higher Education. She has been a Certified Athletic Trainer since 2001 and a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant since 2002. Prior to joining MedStar Health in 2009, Colangelo spent six years at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as an assistant athletic trainer and assistant clinical professor of athletic training.

    Carissa has a special interest in rehabilitation of athletes. She has treated runners with MedStar Health physical therapy since 2009 and has been active in race medicine, including medical coverage for races for several years. She is also active in Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury prevention programs and rehabilitation for return to play after an ACL tear. She is the lead athletic trainer at The Ripken Baseball Experience – Aberdeen and really enjoys working with youth athletes, especially those involved in overhead throwing sports. She is trained comprehensive concussion rehabilitation and golf medicine. Carissa is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist, TPI level 1 certified, certified in myofascial decompression and Blood Flow Restriction. Carissa enjoys her time away from work spending it with her family and embraces her role as a travel youth sport mom watching her son play competitive baseball, soccer, and golf.

  • Megan Bapisteller, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Glen Burnie High School

    Megan Bapisteller, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2012. She is the Head Athletic Trainer at Glen Burnie High School in Anne Arundel County. Megan works directly as a physician extender with Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Jeffery Mayer at MedStar Harbor Hospital Sports Medicine and Shoulder Center.

    Megan earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Salisbury University and her master’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Sports Psychology from the California University of Pennsylvania.

    Megan has a special interest in throwing injuries in baseball, soccer medicine, and sports psychology. Megan enjoys the fact that no two days as an athletic trainer are the same. Megan likes to spend her free time with family and friends and being on a beach or by the water is her happy place.

  • Kim Battaglia, Certified Athletic Trainer, PRN

    Kim Battaglia MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2017. She is a PRN athletic trainer with the MedStar Health system. 

    Kim obtained her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training at Wheeling Jesuit University. She completed her master’s degree in Athletic Training from Indiana Wesleyan University. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Kim was an assistant athletic trainer at Bethany College in West Virginia. Kim believes that experiences help athletic trainer learn and grow so she strives to add as much experience at many different sports, events, opportunities as possible. Kim loves spending time her husband and son, and will be welcoming another son in February 2022.

  • Rebecca Cover, Certified Athletic Trainer, PRN

    Becca is a PRN athletic trainer. She joined our team in 2022. Becca completed her Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2015 and her Masters of Science in Exercise Science from South Dakota State University in 2017.

    Prior to joining MedStar Health, she worked with the Women's Soccer and Women's Basketball programs at American University from 2019-2022 and with the Women's Basketball program at Western Illinois University from 2017-2019. Becca's special interests include injury prevention through corrective exercise and concussion education. In her free time she enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with friends.

  • Jeremy Dockter, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Old Glory Rugby Team

    Jeremy Dockter MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2021. He is the Head Athletic Trainer for the Old Glory Rugby Team in Washington, DC. He is also a physician extender with sports medicine trained orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Wiemi Douoguih.

    Jeremy obtained her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training at University of Nebraska – Lincoln and his graduate degree in Exercise Science from Syracuse University. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Jeremy spent time as an assistant athletic trainer with University of Louisville Football and a seasonal assistant athletic trainer with the New England Patriots. Jeremy has numerous additional certifications, which include, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Functional Movement Screening (FMS) Level 1, Bloodflow Restricted (BFR) Rehabilitation, Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. His special interests include post-surgical rehabilitation and return to play progression, sports performance, injury prevention through corrective exercise and joint mobilizations. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, boating, and hanging out with my girlfriend and family.   • Allison Gardiner, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Meade High School

    Allison Gardiner, MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2020. She is currently the Head Athletic Trainer at Meade High School in Anne Arundel County. Allison also works side by side with sports medicine trained orthopeadic surgeon, Dr. Milford Marchant.

    Allison earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Kings College and a graduate degree in Athletic training at Old Dominion University. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Allison spent 5 years as a secondary school athletic trainer in Norfolk, VA. She has a special interest in Athletic Training Clinical Education and pediatric sports medicine. In her free time, she likes to go walking, hiking, biking, roller blading, and camping.   • Michael Goodman, Certified Athletic Trainer in Physician Practice 

    MedStar Sports Medicine

    Michael Goodman, MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2012. He is currently a full-time physician extender with the physicians of MedStar Harbor Hospital Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery, primarily working side by side with Dr. Leigh Ann Curl, who is the head Orthopedic Surgeon for the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to this Mike spent several years in the role of Head Athletic Trainer for 10 years in Anne Arundel County high schools.

    Michael earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Frostburg State University and a graduate degree in Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania. Michael has a special interest in functional movement, biomechanical analysis, basketball medicine and treating the overhead throwing athlete. Mike enjoys the outdoors, cooking, baking, and spending time with his wife and two daughters. Mike's favorite quote is: "Don't do everything in your power to fit in when you were born to stand out."

  • Tim Happel, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Howard Community College

    Tim Happel, MS, ATC, LAT, NASM-PES joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2010. He is currently the Head Athletic Trainer at Howard Community College (HCC). He is also serving as the Head Athletic Trainer for the USA Men’s National Sixes Lacrosse Team.

    Tim earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Towson University and a graduate degree in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania. Prior to working at HCC, Tim was an Athletic Trainer at Cardinal Gibbons High school as well as Hammond High School. He also served time in the role of Head Athletic Trainer for Real Maryland FC and Assistant Athletic Trainer with the Washington Capitals preseason camps in 2008. Tim has a special interest in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention. In his free time, Tim likes to find outdoor adventures with my wife and three kids and complete in an occasional Triathlon.   • Heather Kohlbus, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Baltimore Blast Soccer Team

    Heather Kohlbus, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 1999. She is currently the Head Athletic Trainer for the Baltimore Blast. Prior to this she was the Head Athletic Trainer at North Harford High School in Harford County for 13 years. Heather also works side by side with the MedStar Health Physical Therapy teams in the Bel Air region and physician extends for sports medicine trained orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Richard Levine. She also spends her summer months providing medical coverage at The Ripken Baseball Experience in Aberdeen, MD.

    Heather earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training/ Sports Medicine from East Stroudsburg University. Heather has a special interest in the adolescent athlete and growth plate injuries. Heather enjoys reading and believes, “If you THINK you are beaten, you are. If you THINK you dare not, you don’t.   • Kellie Loehr, Certified Athletic Trainer, Community Liaison

    USA Lacrosse

    Kellie Loehr MS, ATC/LAT first joined MedStar Sports Medicine as a PRN Athletic Trainer in 2016 after 2 years at Towson University as the athletic trainer for women’s volleyball and softball. Currently, Kellie serves as a community liaison in the role of Head Athletic Trainer at USA Lacrosse. Prior to this she also worked for Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine for 3 years, including coverage at Loyola University of New Orleans and the New Orleans Voodoo Arena Football team.

    Kellie earned her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from West Chester University and her master’s degree in Sports Administration from Louisiana State University. In addition to being a licensed athletic trainer, she is also Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Level I and II certified. Her special interests include lacrosse injuries and epidemiology, and emergency action planning in athletics. In her spare time, Kellie enjoys reading and spending time with my husband and 2 boys, Lucas and Mason, as well as their black lab, Beau.

  • Gabe Luciani, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Old Glory Rugby Football Club

    Gabe Luciani, PT, DPT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2023 as an athletic trainer and physical therapist within the MedStar Health System and MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. Gabe completed his bachelor’s degree in health sciences at Franklin Pierce University in 2019. He completed his Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Athletic Training degrees at Shenandoah University in 2022. He serves as the assistant athletic trainer for the Old Glory Rugby Football Club, and as a physical therapist at the St. James within the MedStar physical therapy clinic in Springfield, VA. Gabe is certified in sports nutrition by the International Society of Sports Nutrition (CISSN), and a certified Wilderness First Responder by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Gabe has special interests in ACL injury prevention and rehabilitation, shoulder rehabilitation, golf medicine, post-operative care, and tactical athletics.   • Joe Martinez, Certified Athletic Trainer, PRN

    Joe Martinez, MS, LAT, ATC joined Medstar Sports Medicine in 2016. He is a PRN athletic trainer with the MedStar Health system. Joe also serves as an assistant athletic trainer with the DC Old Glory Rugby. Prior to his current role at MedStar, Joe was the Head Athletic Trainer at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr., High School was the assistant athletic trainer at The St. James, and head athletic trainer for the Washington Valor.

    Joe obtained his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Psychology from Boston University. He attended West Virginia University, where he received his master’s degree in Athletic Training and George Washington University where he completed his master’s degree in Public Health. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Joe spent 7 years at the collegiate level covering every sport possible including Division 1 men’s and women’s rugby, football, wrestling, tennis, and men’s lacrosse. In his spare time Joe likes to go to Capitals and Nationals games, explore DC, go to breweries, and see live music.

  • Emily Michaelis, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Towson University Gymnastics & Cheerleading

    Emily is an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Towson University in Towson, MD. She joined our team in 2022. She is currently covering women's gymnastics and cooed cheerleading. She completed her bachelors of science in Exercise Science at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019. She obtained her masters of science in Athletic Training at Shenandoah University in 2022. During her second year of her master's education, she interned with the University of Arizona gymnastics team. Emily's special interests include gymnastics medicine and functional range conditioning. In her free time, she enjoys olympic weight lifting and thrifting.

  • Jenna Page, Certified Athletic Trainer, Community Liaison

    MedStar Sports Medicine

    Jenna Page, MEd, ATC/LAT first joined MedStar Sports Medicine as a PRN Athletic Trainer in 2017, which includes her work with the Washington Valor AFL team. Currently she is a community liaison athletic trainer for the Baltimore region. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Jenna was an Associate Athletic Director at Longwood University and an adjunct instructor for their CAATE athletic training education program.

    Jenna earned her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Catawba College and her master’s degree in Athletic Training from University of Virginia. She is an American Heart Association HeartSaver instructor. Jenna’s special interests include golf and soccer medicine, community education about athletic injuries and injury prevention programs as well as developing resources to accompany those initiatives. She is also well versed in manual therapy techniques to help with injury recovery. In her time away from work, Jenna enjoys spending time with her family and friends.   • Jennifer Perrine, PRN

    Jennifer Perrine, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Health in 2017. She is currently a PRN athletic trainer. She was previously at Springbrook high school and Northwood high school. Jennifer also worked as a physician extender with primary care sports medicine trained physician, Dr. Jason Pothast and sports medicine trained orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Carter Mitchell.

    Her bachelor’s degree was obtained at George Mason University. Jennifer was a licensed massage therapist for 8 years and also spent 2 years in the industrial athletic training setting. Jennifer has also spent 20 years as a military member and veteran, currently serving in the Air National Guard. She enjoys studying martial arts, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with her pets.

  • Amber Radtke, Certified Athletic Trainer, Community Liaison & Head Athletic Trainer

    Maryland Black Bears Hockey

    Amber Radtke MS, LAT, ATC, NASM-CES joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2016 after spending 4 years as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Amber is currently the Community Liaison for MedStar Sports Medicine. She is also currently the Head Athletic Trainer for the USA Lacrosse Women’s 6’s team. Prior to taking on these roles within MedStar Health, she was the Head Athletic Trainer at CCBC Essex.

    Amber earned her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Michigan and her master’s degree in Athletic Training at the University of Kentucky. In 2013 she was the Athletic Trainer for the Haudenosaunee National Women’s Lacrosse team during the FILA 2013 World Cup. Amber is also a National Academy of Sports Medicine Corrective Exercise Specialist, Hawk grips practitioner level I and II, and American Heart Association HeartSaver instructor. Her special interests include knee rehabilitation, mental health, and emergency medicine and planning. Amber loves traveling, reading books, and selling homemade roasted almonds.

  • Melissa Read, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Northeast High School

    Melissa Read, MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2012. She is currently the Head Athletic Trainer at Northeast High School in Anne Arundel County. Melissa also works side by side with Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Jeffery Mayer at MedStar Harbor Hospital Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery.

    Melissa earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Salisbury University and a graduate degree in Exercise Science and Physical Education from McDaniel College. Roles with MATA/MAATA. Melissa has a special interest in knee injuries, ACL injury prevention, and concussions. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys spending time with my friends and family, working out/running, or traveling.

  • Gary Simpson, Certified Athletic Trainer

    Chesapeake High School

    Gary Simpson, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2012. He is currently the Head Athletic Trainer at Chesapeake High School in Anne Arundel County. Prior to his current role within MedStar Health, Gary was the Head Athletic Trainer for the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse. Gary works directly with Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician, Dr. Jeffery Mayer as a physician extender at MedStar Harbor Hospital Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery in Waugh Chapel.

    Gary earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Salisbury University and completed a sports medicine internship at Duke University. In addition, Gary has a special interest in golf medicine and the throwing shoulder.

  • Scott Spause, Certified Athletic Trainer

    North County High School

    Scott Spause, MSAT, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2023 as a certified athletic trainer within the MedStar Health System. Scott completed his Master of Science degree in Athletic Training from Towson University. In 2020, he also completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland, College Park.

    He currently serves as the North County High School Head Athletic Trainer in AACPS. Scott has special interests in Functional Rehabilitation and Acute Injury Management. In his free time Scott enjoys trail running, mountain biking, and fantasy football. “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” - Albert Einstein

     

  • Rebecca Taylor, PRN

    Rebecca Taylor, MS, LAT, ATC, PES joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2013. She is currently a PRN Athletic Trainer. Previously, she worked as a physician extender with sports medicine trained orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Carter Mitchell. Prior to joining MedStar Health, Becky was a secondary school athletic trainer for 8 years.

    Rebecca earned a bachelor’s degree in Health Science/Athletic Training from Lock Haven University and a graduate degree in Health Science/Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania. Rebecca is a certified performance enhancement specialist and has a special interest in throwing athletes and basketball medicine. In her spare time, Becky loves to spend as much time as possible with her husband Ryan, two kids Dylan and Mckenna, and their 3 dogs. She also loves to travel and have made a bucket list to see every MLB stadium.

  • Meghan Whitehead, Certified Athletic Trainer, PRN

    Meghan Whitehead MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2020. She is a PRN athletic trainer within the MedStar Health system. Meg completed her bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine at High Point University. She also obtained her master’s degree in Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania. Meghan enjoys spending time with her husband, kids, and dogs. Her favorite quote is: “Lose your dreams and you can lose your mind.”

  • Meghan Wilkinson, PRN

    Meghan L. Wilkinson, LAT, ATC, CSCS joined the MedStar Sports Medicine Team in 2013. She is currently a PRN athletic trainer. She has previously worked in Montgomery County Public schools and with the Old Glory Rugby. Prior to joining the MLR team, she was the Head Athletic Trainer for Montgomery Blair High School and James H. Blake High School in Montgomery County, MD.

    Meghan earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and Exercise Science from Miami University in Ohio. Meghan’s previous experiences include George Mason Club Football, Wheeling Jesuit University (WV), and Professional Physical Therapy (NY) with outreach to St. Mary’s High School athletics and Flushing High School Football. Meghan has a special interest in working with contact sports such as youth football organizations and collegiate Rugby Clubs. he has recently expanded her knowledge in learning dry needling techniques to use on her patients. As a graduate of Montgomery County Public schools, Meghan was honored to be one of the first certified athletic trainers to serve the county.

  • Curtis Wills, PRN

    Curtis Wills, MS, LAT, ATC joined MedStar Sports Medicine in 2013. He is a PRN athletic trainer. Previously, he was the Head Athletic Trainer for Loyola University Club Sports. Curtis also worked as a physician extender with various sports medicine physicians throughout the network.

    Curtis earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Quincy University and graduate degrees in Exercise Science from Miami University (Ohio) and California University of Pennsylvania.
