Athletic trainers are Nationally Board Certified, Licensed Allied Healthcare professionals that work in a multitude of settings focused around sports medicine. It is the role of an athletic trainer to prevent, evaluate and treat injuries, provide timely referrals to the appropriate physicians, educate and communicate effectively to athletes, parents, coaches and physicians, and help facilitate a safe environment for the athlete to recover and return to play at their highest potential.
MedStar Sports Medicine carries a team of close to 50 certified athletic trainers who serve Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. In those communities our athletic training team provides services to youth, high school, college and professional programs. The services our athletic trainers provide to these settings encompass: on-field provision of medical care, rapid access to medical care in the event of serious injury, concussion screening and post –concussion care, along with pre/post-season physicals. They also have the benefit of working alongside the orthopedic and sport medicine physicians they refer to, as well as have access to the vast network of physical therapists, researchers, sports performance specialists and the best physicians in differing specialties.
