MedStar Health Horsemen’s Health program continues to make headlines. Steve Koch, Executive Director of Safety and Integrity Alliance for National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), mentioned MedStar in a recent interview. "…who's really leading the herd, Maryland has some active concussion management, return-to-ride protocols. They’ve got this group called MedStar over there, and they are absolutely setting the bar in the industry."
According to the 2017 Paulick Report Jockeys’ Guild Assembly Diagnosis, Management of Head Injury Still Challenging article, “Concussions account for about 8 to 15 percent of equestrian-related injuries.”
The MedStar Sports Medicine Team developed a protocol based on a jockey’s routine. Any jockey that sustains a head trauma must be symptom free for 72 hours before completing a five phase protocol before they can resume racing.
